Porcelain Veneers in Lake Mary, FL
Having straight, white teeth can enhance your smile and do wonders for your self confidence, but many factors make a smile like that difficult to achieve. Procedures like teeth whitening, implant surgery, and orthodontic treatments like Invisalign® can help enhance your smile, but you may not qualify for them.
Fortunately, at Lake Mary Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry, Dr. Bonn can offer porcelain veneers as a method for enhancing and even protecting your smile that’s quick and minimally invasive.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-shaped, porcelain shells created to cover the fronts of your teeth. These shells are crafted to conceal cosmetic imperfections in your smile such as:
- Gaps
- Stains and discoloration
- Misalignment
- Uneven spacing
- Misshapen teeth
While porcelain veneers do not correct these cosmetic issues, they can make your smile appear whiter, fuller, and straighter, while helping you feel more confident.
Other Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
Besides the previously mentioned benefits, porcelain veneers offer other advantages including:
- Protection against sensitivity
- Natural appearance
- Stain resistance
- Preservation of remaining enamel
The Porcelain Veneers Process
Consultation
Before you can receive your porcelain veneers, you’ll undergo an initial consultation with Dr. Bonn. During your initial consultation at our Lake Mary office, you and Dr. Bonn will discuss your concerns with your smile and your expectations of porcelain veneers.
Then, we’ll provide a thorough oral exam and review your medical history to determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers. If you and Dr. Bonn decide that veneers are right for you, we’ll take photographs of your smile to assist in the treatment planning and we’ll take molds of your existing teeth to perform a pre-treatment wax-up or mock-up of your smile. Then, we’ll schedule you for your next appointment.
Preparing Your Teeth
To prepare your teeth for your veneers, Dr. Bonn will remove a miniscule amount of enamel, about 2/100 of an inch, or no more than the width of a fingernail. This will allow your veneers to adhere to your teeth better and provide a flatter surface for a more natural looking appearance.
To protect your teeth until you have your permanent veneers placed, Dr. Bonn will cover them with temporary veneers. You will get to see the shape and contours of the proposed veneers via the temporaries. You’ll also get to make any changes to the color and shape of your permanent veneers at this time.
Designing Your Veneers
Molds will be made of the temporaries and sent to the lab to serve as the blueprints for your permanent veneers. You’ll return for your last appointment once your permanent veneers are ready, a process that usually takes one to three weeks.
Placing Your Veneers
At your last appointment, Dr. Bonn will remove your temporary veneers and place your permanent ones. You’ll leave our Lake Mary office that same day with a beautiful new smile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Preparing your teeth for your veneers is a minimally invasive part of the veneers process that shouldn’t require any anesthetic. If you’re especially sensitive, we can apply an anesthetic beforehand to eliminate any pain. We’ll make sure your anesthetic is working properly before the procedure takes place.
Porcelain veneers aren’t a permanent solution for cosmetic problems, but they’re designed to last 15 years. However, they can last up to 30 years with proper oral hygiene and regular dental exams with Dr. Bonn at Lake Mary Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry.
In order to preserve and maintain your porcelain veneers for as long as possible, Dr. Bonn recommends you follow these guidelines:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day for at least two minutes
- Use a soft bristled toothbrush
- Floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime
- Rinse with mouthwash between meals
- Visit Lake Mary Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry at least once every six months for regular dental exams
- Avoid eating or chewing on things that are hard or crunchy
If one of your veneers breaks, don’t attempt to reattach it yourself. Instead, put the pieces in a clear plastic container and call our office in Lake Mary by dialing (407) 333-7393 to schedule an appointment. Be sure to bring the pieces with you when attending your appointment so we can determine if your veneer can be repaired or not. If we can’t repair the veneer, we’ll recommend replacements.
